4 Vocal Hygiene Tips to Take Care of Your Voice

Whether you are a singer, actor, or simply just need to make a speech, it is important to take care of your voice by maintaining healthy habits to protect your vocal folds. Here are some simple tips on vocal health so that you can perform at your best!

1) Hydrate Warm water is the best moisturizer to nourish the muscles in your throat. Apart from drinking plenty of water, using a humidifier in the room can also hydrate your vocal cords. 2) Limit Irritants Avoid food and beverages that can cause inflammation, such as spicy food, dairy, caffeine etc. Acidic food such as tomatoes or citrus should also be avoided as it creates acid reflux to come up from your stomach. 3) Rest Your Voice Conserve your voice or take a complete vocal nap before or after your performance to support your vocal cords. Allow it some R&R (rest and relaxation) will always help reduce stress and strain. 4) Develop your vocal range To improve your vocal quality, develop a vocal range that you are most comfortable with and expand it correctly and gradually. Singing really really high is not always the way to charm your audience, it might even hurt your voice.
